Chronic Lyme Disease In Children: Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatment Guide Released

RX Lyme has released a new resource on Lyme disease in children, covering the illness’ symptoms, risks, and diagnostic protocols.

-- The latest guide is for parents and caregivers who have concerns about Lyme disease and how it may affect their children. In the guide, RX Lyme highlights the risks of an acute infection progressing into a chronic illness and how this can potentially affect a child’s development and performance in academic settings.

Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, transmitted to people through the bite of infected black-legged deer ticks or western black-legged ticks. These ticks are often found in wooded areas and grasslands, but they may also infiltrate backyards, presenting considerable risk to children in the Northeastern, Mid-Atlantic, North-Central, and West Coast states of the U.S.

Although not all ticks will carry the disease, some areas are known to have populations with a very high proportion of infected ticks. Early signs of an infection can appear between three and thirty days after the bite has occurred, often inducing flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, fatigue, and muscle aches. A characteristic bull's-eye rash, erythema migrans, may also develop, but RX Lyme’s guide says that this rash does not always appear, despite being a common indicator of an infection.

Children will typically make a full recovery from Lyme disease as long as it is diagnosed and treated in a timely manner. However, infections can be mistaken for other illnesses, leading to misdiagnoses that result in improper treatment. Should this occur, the risk of the infection developing into chronic Lyme disease increases substantially, leading to long-term cognitive difficulties, persistent fatigue, and joint pain.

A proper diagnosis involves a clinical evaluation of symptoms, a physical exam, and a review of potential tick exposure. Blood work that tests for Borrelia burgdorferi antibodies will also confirm the presence of an infection, and antibiotic treatments can begin immediately, the guide says.

If the antibiotic course is unable to treat the disease completely, RX Lyme notes that, in addition to medications, the patient will benefit from a nutrient-dense diet, particularly with foods that are rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids. Complementary therapies, such as acupuncture, massage therapy, and meditation, can also help with physical pain and mental issues caused by a chronic infection.
