AltaSea & Hugo Neu Launch Bicoastal High School Career Program
AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles, the world’s largest ocean research and development destination for the Blue Economy, today announced the launch of its 2024 Ocean Pathways High School Research Mentorship program, developed alongside Hugo Neu Corporation, New York/New Jersey Baykeeper, and the Boys & Girls Club of Newark (BGCN). Carbon Removal and Mariculture Legislation Moves Forward in California Assembly
Two bills currently being considered by the California Assembly received bipartisan support in two committees and now travel to the Appropriations Committee. The Committee on Natural Resources voted unanimously to refer AB 2572, which directs the Air Resources Board (ARB) to assess the environmental standards and promote the use of ocean carbon dioxide removal projects. Similarly, the Committee on Water, Parks, and Wildlife passed AB 3220, which directs the Department of Fish and Wildlife to investigate how to expedite permit processes with mariculture projects.

State of California & Port of LA Bet Big on AltaSea – $12M Will Fund Building of West Coast’s Largest Blue Economy R&D Center of Innovation
The State of California and the Port of Los Angeles have directed $12 million to AltaSea, a nonprofit corporation, to fund the construction of the West Coast’s largest blue economy ocean research and development center. Berth 58 – the site of the initial 60,000 square feet of the planned 180,000 feet of the Center of Innovation at AltaSea – will be the first fully renovated structure on AltaSea’s 35-acre campus at the Port of Los Angeles. The center will house ocean-focused businesses specializing in sustainable aquaculture, offshore renewable energy, and underwater robotics, as well as supporting educational and workforce development initiatives. California State Senator Steven Bradford and California State Assemblyman Patrick O’Donnell led an effort to secure $6 million in state funding to match the Port of Los Angeles’ $6 million commitment. Construction on the Center of Innovation is anticipated to commence by mid-2022 and be completed in the first half of 2023.

USC’s Sustainable Seaweed Aquaculture Lab Lands at AltaSea
AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles has announced a new partnership with University of Southern California (USC) professor Dr. Sergey Nuzhdin of the Dornsife College, Biological Sciences Department, to establish an expansive seaweed lab – the Nuzhdin Research Laboratory – on the AltaSea campus. The 6,000 square foot lab will be the home to groundbreaking research on regenerative aquaculture as well as commercial application of new technologies in aquafarming.
