The FiRa® Consortium announces the release of its Core 4.0 Specifications and Certification Program, notable milestones in ultra-wideband (UWB) technology development. These updates complete the work of IEEE 802.15.4-2024 features to fulfill FiRa-defined use cases. They also enhance FiRa’s capabilities, enabling seamless interoperability and unlocking new possibilities for precise and secure ranging and positioning in diverse applications.

The FiRa® Consortium is launching a new initiative to update its specifications to incorporate new features being introduced in the forthcoming IEEE 802.15.4ab standard. These enhancements are expected to further strengthen ultra-wideband (UWB) capabilities, improving performance for precise and secure ranging and positioning across a variety of use cases, as well as adding sensing capabilities.

FiRa® Consortium has recently announced the availability of a major advancement of its technical specifications to Version 2.0, to prescribe hardware, RF communications, ultra-wideband (UWB) ranging protocols, and behavior of ranging devices. While the original FiRa Certification Program provided the groundwork for supporting interoperable UWB systems and consistent performance, the Certification Program 2.0 expands on it with additional features to support a growing number of diverse use cases. The certification can be done “à la carte,” opening the door for specific certifications for dedicated devices.

FiRa® Consortium has announced the availability of a major advancement of its technical specifications – FiRa MAC, PHY, and UCI Technical Specifications, Version 2.0 to prescribe hardware, RF communications, ultra-wideband (UWB) ranging protocols, and behavior of ranging devices. These updated specifications represent a step forward in achieving an interoperable UWB ecosystem across chipsets, devices, and services infrastructures.

The first is the launch of the initial phase of its certification program aimed at driving interoperability between UWB devices. At the same time, FiRa Consortium is announcing it has now surpassed 100 members, including all of the top handset manufacturers globally, plus market leaders across semiconductors, networking, secure access, and consumer technology.
